Y8 Career event – World of Work

Last week, Y8 participated in a virtual career event, ‘World of Work’, of which the school had organised for some of our Alumnae (past students) to talk about their jobs, their careers so far. The aim was to give us a better understanding of the jobs which are available and give us a wider range of options. It consisted of a series of interesting and inspirational talks from our Alumnae, describing each of their jobs, the highlights, and most importantly, what inspired them to go down that particular career path.
Another aspect, which was particularly beneficial, was knowing what sort of skills are needed for each of the jobs, which are split into 2 categories, hard and soft skills. Hard skills are the qualifications needed, or anything else which can go on a CV, but soft skills are those which cannot be gained instantly and need to be developed, whether it be from an extra-curricular activity, or normal school lessons. For instance, creative thinking and being able to visualize something beforehand is vital for architecture and having organisational skills, and doing forward-thinking is important for an entrepreneur. However, the main takeaway message was to do something that you are passionate about, ‘what sets your soul on fire’, as correctly said by one of our Alumnae, because this is the thing that you will be doing for the rest of your life. Whether it be trying to reduce climate change, or having a job which can take you anywhere, even internationally, a deep interest for history, or even just a love for maths, always choose the career which is best suited to you, and overcome any difficulties you face, no matter what happens.

Thank you to our Alumnae for such a thought – provoking talk and taking the time to join (especially those who were out of country, Dubai and another from Australia); we Y8s have a lot to think about in the future! A huge thanks to Mrs Gillibrand for co-ordinating this event and Mrs Galvin for hosting it.
