Values
At AGGS, we demonstrate our values through our behaviour in the classroom, around school and beyond.
Curious, Kind, Courageous
Curious
We expect students to:
- Actively participate in lessons, for example by:
- Actively and independently seeking out the answers to questions;
- Making predictions before or during a learning activity;
- Thinking aloud during tasks and activities;
- Listening to the thoughts, perspectives and opinions of peers and staff.
- Recognise gaps in current knowledge and actively seek out additional information.
- Read and research beyond the subject curriculum.
- Actively seek out and engage with new activities and opportunities including extra-curricular clubs and activities, educational trips and visits, and leadership roles.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of other people’s beliefs, backgrounds, cultures, perspectives and opinions and celebrate our diverse community.
- Explore and consider a wide range of options for their future including further and higher education and careers.
Kind
We expect that students:
- Are kind to themselves and seek help and support when they need it.
- Check in on each other’s wellbeing and provide or seek help and support for their peers when it is needed or asked for.
- Treat each other with respect and accept each other for who they are, celebrating difference and individuality.
- Actively listen to each other.
- Respect that everyone has the right to feel safe, valued and respected.
- Celebrate the successes of others.
- Are always kind in their actions and words.
- Never discriminate against, denigrate, intentionally harm , bully or intimidate another member of the school community.
- Are upstanders not bystanders.
- Give back through service to the school e.g. by contributing to charitable events, school clubs and activities or representing the school.
- Open/hold doors for others and give way to them on corridors/pathways, both in and around the school.
- Thank others for their help/support or their acts of kindness.
- Respect the school environment so that every member of the community can enjoy and benefit from it.
Courageous
We encourage students to:
- Take academic risks by:
- Answering questions even if they are unsure that they have the correct answer.
- Seeing mistakes as an opportunity to learn and to improve.
- Attempting challenging tasks and activities, embracing the opportunity to learn from any potential mistakes.
- Engaging positively with teacher feedback and actively using it to set goals for future work.
- Not always picking the easiest option where there is choice, but the one which gives them the most opportunity to learn and grow.
- Seek support from a member of staff or a peer when they need it to help them navigate an academic challenge or a difficult situation or personal challenge.
- Take responsibility and accept the consequence of their actions and the impact they have on others.
- Seek opportunities to have their say for example by joining or giving feedback to the school council.
- When appropriate, challenge the unacceptable behaviour of others and hold peers to account, seeking the support of staff to do so.
- Report concerning behaviour to staff to support collective accountability.
Fortiter, Fideliter, Feliciter
Our school motto sets out the characteristics we aim to foster in our students, which enables them to approach life bravely, faithfully and cheerfully.
Fortiter – Bravely
Students are encouraged to take risks, embrace challenges and use learning experiences to help them be better. They develop independence of thought, learn to speak out against injustice and to stand up for what they believe in. They will accept feedback positively and learn to take responsibility for themselves and others.
Fideliter – Faithfully
Students are expected to uphold the school’s values and act in accordance with our high expectations of their conduct. They will act with integrity, doing the right things for the right reasons. They will contribute to the school community and develop into responsible, active citizens.
Feliciter – Cheerfully
Students will approach school with positivity, ensuring that the school continues to be a place where all students feel happy, accepted and valued. They will be proud of our diverse community and be respectful and empathetic towards others. We will foster their passions and inspire them to develop a love of learning.
