The Great Biology Bake Off

Category: Media Team, News, Students write

There was tough competition in the Bake Off tent (Lab 6), as the entrants all brought in their fabulous biology themed bakes for the judges to decide a victor.

Lily in 7-5 prepared two cakes; a lemon drizzle gall bladder cake, complete with sugar kidney stones. Accompanying this was a chocolate chip intestine cake with parasitosis- “a disease of the intestine” Lily informed us, with gummy worms instead of the parasitic worm-much more appetising than the real thing the judges agreed.

Appropriate for the Halloween spirit, a group effort of Maryam and Sofia in 9-2 and Jingjing of 9-4, produced a spooky Severed Arm complete with an icing knife, which realistically showed “muscles in the arm without the skin”. The inside revealed a cross section of the arm, and the judges could clearly distinguish the bone running through the cake.

A fantastic attempt from the pair of sixth form students Emilia 12-5 and Millie 12-1, who’s vanilla sponge cake portrayed “a labelled leaf cell showing the physiological effects of Rose Black Spot”. The judges liked the attention to detail and the accompanied leaf cell organelles on the cake.

After a tense tasting round performed by our Biology Department judges, choosing a winner proved difficult as all cakes were declared ‘delicious’ and tasted just as good as they looked.

The judges decided that the winners were as follows:

  • Overall winner: Lily (7-5) for her “Intestine (parasitosis)” and “Gall Bladder (choleithiasis)” cakes
  • Best taste: Sofia (9-2), Maryam (9-2) and Jingjing (9-4) for their “Severed arm” cake
  • Most scientifically accurate: Emilia (12-5) and Millie (12-1) for their Leaf and leaf cell with Rose Black Spot cake

All remaining cake is being sold to raise fund for the Macmillan charity.

Well done to all participants for their stunning bakes!
