Due to COVID and all the social distancing rules taking place, students have been performing in incredible virtual concerts but on the 24th and 25th November, AGGS had their 2021 Christmas Concert – our first live concert in almost two years! The concert was absolutely amazing, with a large turnout for both nights. It was exciting to see students play live again, especially after the chaos of the recent years and it was clear to see that many of the students had made resounding growth.
As part of this year’s preparations, I had interviewed some of the ensemble and group leaders during the run-up to the concert to find out what they were looking forward to:
I am thinking of perhaps going to a performance conservatoire or maybe to do English Literature at university.
The Junior Strings’ performance as there are many new members this year and to play in the Holberg Suite in String Orchestra.
I’m planning to go into a musical career! I’m going to continue with singing and I would like to learn different classical styles, possibly oratorio, but I would like to do a masters in opera. I’m definitely taking music A-Level and I think after that, I will take a gap year to work on my singing technique and maybe teaching.
Seeing everyone perform and being surrounded by other people who love music.
I enjoy listening to it and I felt the desire to be able to play in the same way as the musicians that I listen to and perform the songs myself.
Right now, I think maybe something in maths or computer science but I am definitely going to continue playing the classical and electric guitar and learn harder pieces too.
I’ve been going to AGGS concerts since Y7 and they are always good so I am excited to hear all the other performances and to perform with my group.
I’ve always been interested in it. My brother started playing the saxophone in Y8 and I wanted to be able to rival him so I decided to become more involved.
To complete my Music GCSE and to compose, perform and carry on with music.
I can’t wait to play live. It’s a lot better as I can see the audience and their live reactions to the music so I am excited for that.
Both nights of the concert were a tremendous success and I loved listening to all the pieces (one of my favourites being the Studio Ghibli pieces, Howl’s Moving Castle Theme, performed by junior strings). I can’t wait to see what the set list for the upcoming Spring Concert on 16th March. Finally, I like to end the article by thanking all of the students and teachers that have come together to make this happen and to congratulate them on their lovely performances.
