MFL RAF Talk

Category: MFL, News, Publicity, Speakers

On Friday 27 September we were delighted to welcome Flight Sergeant Gemma Slaughter in to school, to talk to our Year 9 and Year 10 pupils. Gemma has spent 15 years in the RAF and has been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. She talked about her career as an intelligence linguist and the importance of being able to speak different languages to keep communities safe. Gemma is fluent in Pashtu and Arabic and learnt these languages as part of her RAF training. The pupils undertook a team activity, where they intercepted written and spoken messages and had to de-code when and where the attack was going to take place, and what type of attack was being planned. The pupils also learnt how to write their names in Arabic. Gemma’s talk highlighted the wide variety of careers available within the RAF and the importance of being able to communicate different languages.
