European Day of Languages at AGGS

Category: MFL, News, Staff

To celebrate European Day of Languages, among other activities, a selection of teachers came together to show the Year 7s how it’s done in the Staff Spelling Bee. Every teacher was given a period of time in which they were given lots of different words in English which they then required to translate into French and spell out using the French alphabet rather than the English one. Common words they were tested with, included yellow (jaune) and purple (violet).

There were five contestants – Mrs Gill, Mrs Walker, Mr Lovelady, Mrs Clutton and Mr Osborne and between them the competition was fierce, as Mrs Stokes and Mrs Crowson fired word after word at the linguists and they replied with equal speed and calm.

The results between the various contestants were close but, by the end, Mrs Walker was a few points ahead making her the winner of European day of Languages’ Staff Spelling Bee.
Congratulations!

We look forward to seeing how the Year 7s themselves fare in their own Spelling Bee and wish them all the best of luck – just follow these teachers’ examples and you’ll be racing ahead!
