Charity Update

Category: Charity, News

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed in any way to the Children in need appeal and especially to the forms’ generous donations via the weekly charity collections. Along with the money raised by the charity committee, the weekly collections from forms took the grand total raised for Children in need to  £1114.91. This is a fabulous amount and a testament to the generosity of the students (some of whom gave up a lot of time as well as money), especially as it was raised in just four weeks.

Charity day is just around the corner and this year’s donations for Charity day will be split between the following three charities as voted for by the charity committee:

Cyril Flint is a Manchester based charity which aims to tackle the issues of social isolation and loneliness that many elderly people in our community feel. They provide a befriending service where lonely older people are matched with a volunteer who has similar interests, to talk to. This greatly helps to reduce the isolation a person feels, and can just brighten up someone’s day. The charity committee chose to support this charity, as we felt that the Christmas holidays in particular could be very lonely if we didn’t have family and friends to celebrate with. We wanted to support Cyril Flint this charity day, as we know that even a few kind words can make such a difference to someone’s life.

Water aid is a worldwide charity that provides to those who don’t have access to the most basic human necessities. Partnering with communities in less developed places in the world, Water aid provides water supplies, hygiene solutions and sanitation for those in need. We think it is such an important charity to support because it helps provide clean drinking water, something that we are able to take for granted every day, to many people who would not otherwise have this.

Bone Cancer Research – In 2004, a group of families who had lost children and young people to primary bone cancer came together. They pooled funds from money they had raised, and together with guidance from a consultant at St James’s University Hospital Leeds, the Bone Cancer Research Trust was formed.
Today, the Bone Cancer Research trust aims to fund research into all forms of primary bone cancer and to be a supportive network for people affected by this disease. They also aim to bring people together so that they can share stories, inspire hope and signpost people to specialist support.
We have chosen to support the Bone Cancer research trust because it is the leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer, which tends to affect children and young people. Their vision is of a world where primary bone cancer is cured.
