Food & Nutrition this term

Category: Food, News

This has been another lovely term in Food and Nutrition. The year 10 students have made a great start to their new course and year 11 continue to work really hard. Year 9 have been creating food from around the world as part of their ‘street food’ project.

As well as the many amazing dishes that leave this kitchen every day, lots of extra curricular activities and trips have also taken place. Food club, run by two of my ex GCSE students in year 12, was a great success with year 8 and will be open to year 7 next term. I would like to thank them for their help. We have continued to enjoy being part of STEM club too.

We had a recent visit from Paul Taylor, a chef from Trafford College who demonstrated a variety of finishing techniques to year 11 to help them improve the presentation of their work. I have also really enjoyed hearing about the work that the students have been doing at home – making dishes for their families and friends. The food has looked amazing and it sounded as though it tasted good too! Mr. Whelan-Frost, a food safety expert, kindly came in to talk to year 10 about food hygiene and to teach year 11 how to fillet fish.

We had a very enjoyable trip to The Good Food Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Mrs. Lovelady and myself are very proud of the selfie we took with Michel Roux Junior and the students particularly enjoyed watching the demonstration by Nadia, the Bake Off champion.

The department continues to go from strength to strength with all the support of the parents and the hard work of the students. Thanks also goes to the PTA. The new sauce pans are fabulous and already well used! I wish you all a very happy, foodie Christmas.
