Chemistry week

Category: News, Science

Chemistry week took place on 1 -12 November and to align with COP 26 this year’s theme was sustainability. The Chemistry department ran a variety of activities for different key stages to celebrate the occasion. There were research talks for KS5 from our own Dr Watkins, on the hot topic of exploring carbon capture using organometallic complexes, and a stimulating external talk on the interactions between nanoplastics and animal cells given by Dr Yong from Daresbury Laboratory.

KS3 and KS4 pupils enjoyed some practical sessions which saw them making bioplastics using corn flour and starch extracted from potatoes. The pictures below show some KS4 pupils proudly showing off the samples of biodegradable plastic that they made:

Year 10 students enjoyed playing The Diamond Light Source Board game (there are now rumours emerging of some KS4 students setting up a permanent Science Board Games club!!)

Finally, congratulations to Meriem E 9-6 who scoured the school site for hidden articles on sustainability and climate change to finish first in the Chemistry Week Treasure Hunt and in so doing won a set of coveted Chemical Elements Top Trumps!!
