Raspberry Pi Foundation Competition Finalists

Category: Competitions, Computing, News

Congratulations to four of our Year 12 pupils; Sabina , Preesha, Diya, and Sakshi who recently entered a computer science competition run by PA Consulting in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Using engineering and coding skills and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, students put their ingenuity to the test to come up with inspiring solutions to global challenges. Responding to pressing energy crises across the world, this year’s theme was accelerating energy transition.

They created a smart meter that allowed users to remotely turn lights on and off in a model home. They included the ability for the lights in the room to automatically change their brightness depending on the amount of light entering the room from outside when users selected eco mode from the app. Included in the app was also an AI assistant who would answer questions about how to make your home more energy efficient, a quiz users could take to find out their ‘eco personality’, and an energy usage predictor.

From over 200 entries into the competition, the pupils made it to the finals held in Central London where they completed against 20 other teams in challenges and presentation pitches with employees from companies such as Microsoft, Kellogg’s, and PA.

Unfortunately, the team missed out on being crowned overall winners on the day, but they definitely did themselves and the school proud! They had a very enjoyable day, made some great connections, and even got an hour to do a bit of sightseeing in London.

Also, a big thank you to Mr Roberts for helping the pupils with the electronics part of their project and to Mrs Lovelady for creating the wooden home to make their model of their creation come to life!
