Biology Week Summary

We celebrated Biology Week this year from 4^th-11^th October with a range of extracurricular activities. First and foremost, we have some students to congratulate. Our #BioBakes contestants cooked some tasty treats and our winner Lily O in Year 7 was even shortlisted into the national final 10 by the Physiology Society, well done Lily! The BioArt Attack competition is still being judged by the Royal Society of Biology but congratulations to our internal winner Eve Goodall in Year 12 for their artwork “Acupuncture Points on the Dorsal Upper Body”.

Our resident scientists in the Science Society ran a fantastic exhibition that demonstrated the wonders of Biology: including a food murder mystery, banana DNA extraction and a microscopic examination of mosquito larvae. Read more here

We also had some visitors to the school. Professor Ian Roberts from the University of Manchester gave an excellent talk on antimicrobial resistance which was very well attended. Then a scientist from the London Zoological Society held a Q&A for those interested in a career in research.

Finally, we ran some workshops for our older students – Ms Hulme’s dissection masterclass allowed students to get hands on dissecting rats and learning about physiology and anatomy – read more here. Mr Feltham’s Drosophila genetics and evolution workshop was a FLYing success, demonstrating the usefulness of this fascinating organism as a research model – read more here.

Thank you everyone for getting involved. A lot of planning went into the events and it was great to see such a high level of interest, it made the whole process worthwhile. We look forward to running it again next year!
