Genetics Fly Lab Workshop-Biology Week

Category: Media Team, News, Students write

The Sixth form students were privileged to be able to attend a workshop on Genetic Mutations carried out by Mr Feltham from the University of Manchester.

Students learned the close genetic relations between humans and flies, and were told about mutations that occur in both flies and people.

A fun, hands on experience consisted of deducing fly mutations under a microscope and matching them to the features listed, observing temporary paralysis on live flies, as well as the effect of alcohol and enzyme action on them.

Allowing sixth form biology students to pair their curriculum knowledge with extra information proved beneficial, and will definitely aid in their understanding of A Level Biology!

A big thank you to Mr Feltham for creating a fun and fascinating workshop!
