Eco Day Celebrations

Category: Charity, Citizenship, News, School Council

28th April 2022 marked the inaugural Eco Day celebrations at AGGS. Students were invited to wear blue and green accessories to celebrate the Earth and the natural environment. The event was organised by the environment department of School Council, and in future years may coincide with global celebrations of Earth Day, however this year it fell in the Easter Holidays. In collaboration with the Charity Committee, donations collected will be divided between Better Lives Foundation and Labour Behind the Label; two charities that work to alleviate the struggles of garment workers around the world, partly by campaigning for worker’s rights. These organisations were chosen to reflect the theme for the first AGGS Eco Day, which was Fast Fashion, as this is an issue which is particularly pertinent to the demographic of students at AGGS. A tradition that we hope to establish is a Christmas Jumper swap in December, in which students can get a new festive jumper without having to purchase one for Christmas Jumper Day, and Eco Day will begin the stage where we collect them. In the spirit of reducing clothing waste, the day saw the launch of an upcycling competition for Years 7 and 8, in which entries for a T-shirt handbag (or other design ideas) will be judged on how creative and resourceful they are of recycled materials. The closing date is the 13th of May.
